Sonja Parks
I remember the first time I worked with TTT (on their production of Good Person), several of the more seasoned actors told me (warned me?) that this would be an acting experience unlike anything I was used to. I was told to expect to be inches away from the audience, expect them to get up & move around, enter and leave the space, talk back to my character and even give me and my character advice. I'm sure they were trying to prepare me, but none of this sounded new. Or scary.
I grew up in the Baptist church and the whole "call and response-audience participation" mode was second nature to me. Far from being frightened by the prospect, I felt exhilarated.
I've never really gotten used to--or even liked--the whole "sit-quietly-and-applaud-politely-at-the-end" model of more traditional theatres and theatre audiences. As my grandmother used to say: "Give me my flowers NOW!"
For me, performing with TTT always feels like I'm back home in church. Amen! And can I get a hallelujah?
To date, Sonja has been in 5 TTT productions including: Good Person of Szechwan, Cyrano, Antigone, Little Shop of Horrors and Eurydice.
She has performed all over the Twin Cities at many theatres including: The Guthrie, Penumbra, The Children's Theatre Company, The Jungle and Pillsbury House Theatre, as well as off-Broadway at The Public Theatre in New York.
She is the recipient of a Minnesota State Arts Board Fellowship, a McKnight Fellowship, was named "Best Actress-2005" by City Pages Weekly, has been a featured performer in Time magazine and was named "One of Seven Artists You Must See" by American Theatre Magazine.
